If you're like me your cell phone is always at the ready to film or capture a great dance moment. So why do you think you need some expensive camera to film yourself or your students dancing? The truth is you don't and you can get a lot out of the cell phone sitting in your pocket. Cell phones these days have so many capabilities that they're almost making expensive cameras obsolete.
There are many different apps that can help you make your dance clips stand out above the noise. One example, if you have an iPhone download imovie and inshot apps & edit your clips within imovie then export to inshot where you find some really extraordinary filters that will make your 1 minute dance clip that much more interesting for everyone visiting your social media page.
If you are an android user simply download any movie editing app & the inshot from Google play then repeat the process as in IOS.
Another great download is "text on photo". This application allows you to write on your danceclips. This is especially great for dance studio sin promoting events and Pro/Am teachers showcasing their students. Begin to create an amazing one minute demonstration of the best you have to offer with exciting text written across the screen to have your viewers stay engaged for the entirety of your presentation.
The goal of all your social media should be capturing your viewers attention within the first 3 seconds and managing to keep it there for the rest of your post. That being said you will need to be a lot more creative than setting your phone on a stand and simply filming a one directional clip with filters.

My Top 3 Tips on "do's and dont's" for Social Media1. Why you should NOT buy followers!
The major problem with this fake process is that you will never make it to the Instagram explore page, which is VERY vital in order to get noticed & grow your following. Remember that Instagram servers track your activity. A huge spike of followers or likes from seemingly nowhere is a big red flag. Secondly, anyone that by a sheer stroke of luck comes across your page will instantly notice that you have "24,000" followers but only 100 views on your videos or pics (thats embarrassing). It just makes you or your brand (which are one and the same btw) look bad and not trustworthy. Instead, GROW ORGANICALLY ! Post quality, entertaining & valuable content. Any posts that have either one or ideally a combination of all 3 factors will gain traction. Follow up your quality post with a great description but make it to the point! No one will read a 20 line description on Instagram, the secret to Instagram content creation is in the name "Insta" NOT "Readgram" or "bloggram". Long form written content is for FaceBook and blogs !
2. Don't Click Bait
Click bait is the old "bait and switch" technique. Meaning, using a thumbnail that does NOT relate to the video you are posting. This tip applies to all social platforms: FaceBook, Instagram, YouTube even Twitter. Instead, create a sreenshot then add text on the image. This does 2 things. Firstly it captures a viewer's attention by making them aware of what they are about to watch (this works very well for YouTube & FaceBook) . Secondly, your viewer begins to trust you because you fullfil your unspoken promise (description with video caption) as they consume your content. For Instagram always create a "cover" for your videos. The "cover" should use the "Law of Thirds" taken from film and photography (Read my "Post Secrets" blog). If you have a creative video or pic where this is impossible simply create a "cover" of the most colorful or eye catching moment. But remember that your content should relate to your thumbnail. Trust is a very valuable tool to getting and retaining your followership!
3. Recycle Content
Instagram is wonderful because it has links to FaceBook, Twitter, Tumblr and even foreign sites like Ameba (Japan) and Vk (Russia). Even though I strongly suggest creating content intended for its native platform. This is a good start to at least broaden your reach. It has never been easier to be 4 or 5 places at once. Perhaps that one piece of content you created will be seen by someone on Ameba in Japan and go viral !

How to grow your following now !
It should come as no surprise to you that social media on mobile devices are the main sources with which people send and receive information PLUS formulate their buying decisions.
Its a matter of whether you are marketing yourself in the right platform and are you willing to dedicate now in order to have success in the future?
The most common question I receive is "How do I grow my followers on social media ?"
This is a bit of a loaded question. As every individual is different and might be more comfortable on one platform rather than another. Let me explain.
If you are the type of personality that prefers to read rather than consume visual content, a blog would be the best platform for you to express your opinions and gather an audience which shares your love for reading and consequently you can then market your brand to that target audience. Here are 3 platforms to look into. "Blogger" , "Medium" and the totally free short form content app "Tumblr"
Now, if you are more of a visual person then a platform like YouTube or for short form content Instagram would best suit your personality!
Perhaps you were a very busy individual and don't have time to edit a lot of visual content but you still have a lot to say about your particular topics of passion. You can use snapchat for quick daily bursts of information or content for an audience that shares the same limited amount of time to consume information.
Your goal should then be to create quality entertainment from the perspective of your target audience in order to offer them value in exchange for the time they spend consuming your content. With that being said, each platform has its own hurdles to overcome. One common hurdle is initially gaining traction, meaning getting eyes on your content.
Tip #1. Quality, quality, quality!
Once you discover which platform best suits you make sure that all content you put into the world offers value to your audience!!! Don't just post videos or blogs about what you want, rather make sure that your audience can benefit from what you are creating. Example, if your true passion (besides dancing) is travel then On your platform of choice give daily deals on which airline is offering the best tickets to your favorite locations in the world. See its easy to offer value to your audience!
Tip #2. Create engagement
Follow up with a question to engage your audience. Ask "What is your favorite place in the entire world if you can go right now?" And "Who would you bring?" By doing this you have the next bit of information for your following post!
Tip #3. Stay consistent !!!!
I'm not going to lie! This is the most difficult part. Consistency is often where 99% of individuals trying to grow their audience fall short. To help make this easier simply create a daily routine just like making a cup of coffee in the morning, to post a minimum of twice a day. This is a very vital part of making yourself known on social media. I like to use the Wayne Gretzky qoute "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." What I mean by this, just put out content! Something is always better than nothing and you never know who might consume that piece of information you put into the world. It could be your first million dollar client!
You are ready to karate chop the social media world! Now get out there and start to put these tips to use.

How to pack your dance studio ?
Answer: Give away lessons for free !
New Studios 1 year and younger:
Why is free better? Simply put because it's free! To get more clientele into your dance studio give away as much information for free as possible including offering free introductory lessons for new students . You will get noticed and have a larger amount of new clients coming to the studio.***
Think back to the time when you're offered a product for free and a product for 99 cents you most likely took the free sample. It is no different with a dance studio. You'll have a much busier studio and more people referring their friends to try out dancing. On the other hand if you charge $25 for a client to take their 1st lesson that creates a buying decision in their mind instantly and whether they actually want to try and fulfill their dreams?!
Established studios 1 year or longer in business
If you've noticed a decrease in attendance and/or sales. A simple rule of thumb in a service business that is often overlooked is referrals. Offer your student a free lesson for every friend that accompanies them a takes a sample lesson.
Incorporate an "accolade" system for top performing students in referrals. Praise your student body for their assistance on bringing in new business. An easy example is a "plaque wall of greatness" ! I mean really ?! Who doesn't like to show there family friends that they are appreciated and praised !
By having more action and movement in your studio, from the outside it will always be very busy. So for a potential new student where do you think they would rather learn ? A dance studio that they drive past all the time and there is nobody moving ? Or a studio that is always in motion !

Starting Position: Place a ball or tightly wrapped towel against a wall then lean against it, the top of the ball should be at the lower small of your back Your feet should be placed 6 - 12" in front of your body, feet shoulder-width apart and facing forward and barely turned out.
Pull your shoulders back and down like you do in latin frame, without arching your back and gently lean on the ball, put your feet flat on your feet. Hands held in front of you parallel with the floor.
Part one: Calmly lower while breathing in, the ball should be rolling down the wall at the same time, but staying intouch with your lower back and mid-back against the ball or towel. Make sure you're dropping your hips under the ball and pushing your them back to not put too much stress on your knees. . Go down until feel the stretch & your thighs are level with the floor then stay there for 10 seconds. Make sure you are not moving your feet around
As you begin to rise make sure to exhale and put an emphasis on replacing your hips beneath your torso. Stay standing only briefly for 2 seconds ! Dont use this time as an excuse to rest !!!
Bonus ChallengeAfter you finish 20 reps meaning full up and down motions.
Stay in a squat position (knees parallel the floor) with out the ball on the wall and hold your water bottle or cell phone squeezed between your knees! GOOD LUCK !!!

Now that you have your editing apps (read my Apps for Dance clips Blog) its time to find some places to perch your phone and set up your angle!
Also, if you havent already ,make sure to find exactly which song you would like to use for dance clip .
Step #1 On your phone (Samsung note 9 has a incredible speakers -> https://amzn.to/2OeNEVP ) play the song you are going to use on another phone or music device. Make sure you begin at the exact same section of the track every time.
Step #2 Film from at least a couple different places in the room. This may seem exhausting but to your viewers dont care what you think! They just want to be entertained. Keep in mind, every 5 min piece of content I create for Dance Today can sometimes take up to 5 hours of editing! Imagine what it takes to create just ONE episode of Ballroom Geisha?

Step #3 Now, go to your editing app and string together the clips from all the different angles. Split the clips into 5 to 10 second pieces and insert them back on the film timeline in chronological order. If you did this correctly the music you played should match up just perfectly… or you quickly find out you need to be working more on your timing (wink)!
You should add the music after you edit together your film clip. This is highly recommended as the music will be more crisp and enjoyable to the viewer!

Squat with a Wall
The Ice Skater
You need to start slow with this exercise so you keep proper form. Okay, there's a lot going on here — arms curling, torso tightening, legs kicking back.
You may need to watch the video twice to get the hang of it, but the thigh-tightening potential here is high: Go slow, but definitely keep going.
The Leg Circles
If this exercise becomes to easy for you as continue to train. Simply begin to write the alphabet with your legs rather than circles. Let me know in the comments if you pass "T" after 2 minute warm up!
